Let's talk about what it means to be a family caregiver...
According to AARP, in a 2015 report on Caregiving in the U.S., it is reported that "an estimated 43.5 million adults in the United States have provided unpaid care to an adult or a child in the prior 12 months" proceeding when the survey was conducted.
Only 18.2% of those interviewed identified themselves with the term caregiver.
Let's think about that those statistics for a moment. 43.5 million adults in the United States are unpaid caregivers.
Are you one of them?
A family caregiver is anyone who provides support to an ill or disabled loved one. That support can be emotional or physical support; also financial. The illness or disability can range from mental illness, physical illness, chronic or acute, even substance abuse.
Most of us believe we are just being a good friend or a good family member but understanding what we are is important in both knowing how to provide the best care to our loved one and also how to provide the best care for ourselves.
Essentials of Caregiving was created to help family caregivers of all kinds with the support and the education they need to lead their best caregiving lives.
There are a lack of resources for family caregivers out there and Essentials of Caregiving wants to help provide some essential and necessary education that includes all kinds of family caregivers, not just disease specific. Essentials of Caregiving aims to provide services to help make the lives of family caregivers easier by providing education, support, and helping connect you to the resources you need for your specific caregiving journey.
We are also about helping advocate for family caregivers by providing education courses to professionals and businesses about caregiving sensitivity in the workplace.
As we grow the programs and materials available will grow to help anyone looking to advocate for family caregivers and for family caregivers themselves. We plan to partner with non-profits to help bring sponsorship funds directly to the hands of the family caregivers who need it most.
